A CAD/CAM system only works if there is a post-processor. What is a post-processor? The program output towards the CNC machines or robots is managed by simple ASCII files that can be modified with common text editors.
The post-processor is, therefore, a software that transforms geometric entities (lines, arcs, circles, tool axis direction, etc.) into a code that can be understood by the CNC machine controller.
The post-processor is one of the fundamental elements of a CAM program and it constitutes a very delicate aspect with regards to machine programming: mistaking the specifications of a post-processor can result in infinite and difficult problems, often leading to incorrect use of the machine tool in the most extreme cases and the consequent inefficiencies. This has direct implications to the quality of work and safety.
For this reason, it’s essential that during the presetting phase, the offsets that are sent to the NC control are correct and, above all, that they are "inserted in the right place".
It should be remembered that each brand of numerical control has its own specific computer language and, therefore, it is necessary to structure the program in a suitable manner.
But let's get to us: How can we send the offsets from presetter to CNC? It’s a much simpler operation than you might think. Once the post-processor has been defined within the presetter configuration, we can move on to the tool measurement phase. Once the measurement phase has been completed and the dimensions have been saved, one can safely send the updated program with the measurements taken previously, by using the dedicated icons within the software. The presetting machine will be linked to the company network in order to share the outgoing data stream.
